Gun Culture in Eighteenth-Century American Politics and Society
Constitution, guar­anteeing a right to arms, is one of the most contentious issues in American politics. The role firearms should or should not play in society is highly contro­versial and hardly a candidate for public office will not be questioned on his or her stance on guns. In the 18th century, guns were even more important. Used in hunting, dueling, crime, self-defense and the military, they symbolized freedom and the ability to defend it, mas­culinity, social standing and (dis)ordered society. Based upon a variety of sources, this book shows how Ameri­can society of the 18th century used guns; thought, talked and fought about them, both in politics and out. In der amerikanischen Politik ist das Recht auf Waffenbesitz gegenwärtig ein heftig umstrittenes Thema. Es beruht auf einer alten Tadition. Schon im 18. Jahrhundert hatten Schusswaffen eine enorme Bedeutung. Bei der Jagd, im Duell, bei Straftaten, (Selbst)Verteidigung und Militärdienst symbolisierten diese Waffen Freiheit sowie die Fähigkeit und Bereitschaft, sie zu verteidigen, ebenso wie Männlichkeit, sozialen Status und (Un)Ordnung in der Gesellschaft. Anhand vielfältiger Quellen zeigt dieses englischsprachige Buch, wie die amerikanische Gesellschaft des 18. Jahrhunderts mit Waffen umging, über sie dachte, sprach und stritt und wie diese Waffenkultur in den politischen Diskurs Eingang fand.
