Travels and cultural encounters (some of them on the bike), regional and political identities in Britain and Europe and their interrelations, contacts between the past and the present – this volume’s 22 academic and essayistic contributions engage with the field of “cultures in contact” in numerous ways. At the same time, they highlight a number of past and present (research) interests of Joachim Schwend – former translator, eager traveller, unpretentious Professor at Leipzig, and inspiration as well as addressee of this humble book of essays.
